Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas is a National Park 70 miles west of Key West, Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. It preserves a Civil War era fort, Fort Jefferson, and the surrounding coral keys. It was built to protect the mouth of the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, but it never saw ant action. It did serve as a prison for Dr. Samuel Mudd, the doctor who repaired John Wilkes Booth's leg in the days following his assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
